A guest appearance from Matt Thiessen (Relient K) on the first radio single and music video, Nuisance, hints that this album will connect well beyond John's strong fan-base (built by steady touring and main-stage festival performances over the past four years) and into the mass consumer market. John Reuben did it again. Yet another album has been dropped that contains very nice beats along with catchy, witty, and peircing lyrics. Johns first 3 albums, Monuments, Are We There Yet, and Hindsight all were carried by the hip hop genre, but after taking over the majority of his own production in Professional Rapper and now The Boy vs. The Cynic, John has merged in the Rock genre, which is fine, because he fits very well, being featured by Matt Theissen of RK, and one can hear similarites in music of Thousand Foot Krutch and Kutless. I personally think that John Reuben will continue in his new direction especially since he no longer tours with Alon or DJ Manuel as they have gone thier own ways. Speaking of which, Alon is set to release a new album soon with the title of Communicator and by word of mouth I have heard the DJ Maunel has been touring with Grits and was a major contribution to the latest DeepSpace5 album, Unique, Just Like Everyone Else.

hip hop meets punk

A lot of people have given John a lot of harsh words because he's going too "soft" with this album. So he's veering into rock! It's awesome! I love it. Who cares what the beat is, as long as the lyrics are God-centered and pure- which they are. I think I can call this one of Mr. Zappin's most God-focused albums. It's very uplifting, and you still get your fix of rap. You can't accuse John Reuben of sounding like kutless and/or thousand foot krutch. Although both are great artists, JR just has a style of his own. Great disc.... definitely worth the money.

Reuben, Reuben, Reuben. It's easy to see that he's one of the most innovative and fresh artists out there. He's been dippity doin' his thing for 4 albums now, and the folds keep multiplying as he provides us with even more facets to his personality. This is easily his most powerful record, with tracks that just get right down to business, and rarely let up. "Out of Control" and "Nuisance" (the first two tracks to be "released" in any light), are a great way to start the record. (And the chorus to "Nuisance" is just so ridiculously addictive...man.) The spoken-word style of rap used on "Chapter 1" sounds very reminiscent of a couple past Reuben tracks, which shows he's not forgetting what he used to get to where he is now. Then he hits with "Follow Your Leader" politically unbiased and charged with disgust at the politics of the world, this track is one of the standouts on the record. "Sales Pitch" follows up nicely, then things get a little lighter with "Sunshine." It feels like a sunny day, that song. One of my personal favorites, "So Glad" comes up, mixing disco and P-Funk elements. That song is just fun. Fun fun fun. Then "What About Them?" (which is probably Reuben's most edgy songs to date) and "There's Only Forgiveness" somber things up some, but they're not heavy musically. The words WILL grab you though. "All I Have" is the new "God is Love" (from "Are We There Yet?"). Listen to me when I say this: You can sing the chorus from "God is Love" to the chorus of "All I Have." And that is a blast to do. Reuben even sings the verses on this song. I love it. He hits hard again with "Cooperate," another hard-hitting song, and finishes with the wonderfully endearing "The Boy Vs. The Cynic." John's continually amazing me. He keeps expanding the realm that he occupies, and he remains my favorite musical artist. Since I got the cd, which has been 5 days ago now, I've listened to the CD at least 20 times. Reuben knows how to make good music. My jaw is still on the floor.

Well worth the money

First let me say I'm a Reuben fan so I guess I'm a little biased, however this is a good CD. I won't say great, I have mixed emotions about some of the tracks on this CD. For instance, Nuisance, his first single off this CD, I can't hardly stand. I hit the skip button on this track a lot. I am just really not into the "punk" thing at all. I have always really liked John's "old-school" style which his earlier worked featured more, but he has managed to mix some harder rock components into his style that works real well. This CD is definitely not as "light-hearted" as some of his others, but I think that fits the overall theme of ""BOY vs CYNIC" What I love about Reuben's work is his knack for changing up his lyrical patterns to keep the listeners on their toes to take in all that he's saying. The lyrics on this CD are very God centered, which I also appreciate. This is a little different for John and I'm sure it will garner some mixed emotions from fans that are expecting the same Reubenesque tracks of old, but it is well worth the money and your time to read the lyrics along with the tracks. This is a fresh new side to Reuben. I personally have all of his cds and with this one he took a serious side and he tells the world what he believes. Plus I love the band that he's working with instead of just a dj. Hip hop is my favorite but this just redefined it for me. Reuben is awesome and with this album he shows us all he's not goin' nowhere!

New road ahead for Mr. Zappin

I listened to this CD a few times now. I was not impressed at first, but now it has grown on me a little. I will say that it is not my favorite...possibly due to the change in style. I can see that John is changing his style and will be putting out a new style. Maybe with this transition phase we will see a new John Reuben in the future.

This is my first album by John Reuben and I have to say I rather enjoyed it. The songs are catchy and the lyrics are really good. I think anyone that likes catchy tunes and great lyrics should buy this album.

John is a great artist (similar to tobyMac) that puts high-beat rap music with christian words! Great if you love the music of rap songs, and not the words! John delivers a message we can all enjoy!

John Reuben is unbelievable. With so many rap artists focused on the coolest words to say with the hottest beats, everyone starts sounding the same. I can't even tell the difference between LL Cool J and snoop dogg these days. Enter john reuben. A man who is primarily focuseed on his message leaving behind his care for acceptance. His message is crazy, outlandish, and really cool. Listen to the words. Sit down and open the booklet. This album's deep. Standout Tracks: "Nuissance" and "Sales Pitch"
